INSTRUCTOR, Automotive Technology – NICHOLS CAREER CENTER
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Nichols Career Center in Jefferson City, MO, is accepting applications for our Automotive Technology Instructor position for the 2024-2025 school year. Job duties include instructing students through hands-on experience in a fully functioning automotive shop with the goal of preparing them for an entry-level position or post-secondary education. The skills covered may include basic maintenance techniques for tune-ups, tire rotation, and oil change and may demonstrate more advanced techniques for computer diagnostics, installing or repairing vital systems such as the engine, electrical system, or transmission. Expected student learning outcomes include passing the ASE Entry-Level Student Certification. Applicants must be able/willing to obtain MO Career Education teacher certification and maintain industry and required certification(s) for specialized fields. The candidate will be expected to be active in the SkillsUSA local chapter, including but not limited to fundraising, attending related field trips, and preparing students to compete in SkillsUSA District, State, and National Competitions. While prior teaching experience is ideal, practical experience in these areas would allow a candidate consideration for this position. NCC is looking for a student-centered individual who has an excellent attitude, a team mindset, a strong work ethic, and a self-starter. The position will remain open until filled. May require job development and placement of students in the local business communities for worksite training.
CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Missouri CTE Teaching Credential for the subject to be taught is required.
NOTE: A Temporary CTE Teacher Certification can be obtained while performing the duties of the position with proof of appropriate occupationally related experience. Appropriate CTE instructor coursework must be taken in conjunction with earning a Temporary CTE certification.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE: At least three (3) years of work experience in the trade to be taught are preferred; however, up to two (2) years of the preferred experience may be substituted with related post high school education, apprenticeship program, or college preparation course work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions required.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s or Associate's degree or Technical Certification preferred.
CERTIFICATES/ CREDENTIALS/LICENSES:
- Valid Missouri Driver's License
- Professional Certified ASE Technician (Preferred)
REPORTS TO: Nichols Career Center Administration
FUNCTIONS:
- To utilize a variety of effective and professional teaching techniques and methods which will assist students in attaining the performance objectives of the course.
- Develop and maintain an appropriate training site for student instruction, including a statement of the student performance objectives to be achieved while at the training site
- Provide immediate supervision to all students while they are at the training site
- Accurately and punctually submit all forms and information needed for attendance, accounting, and grade reporting
- Attend staff meetings and other such meetings
- Provide effective and cooperative liaison activities between CTE, school districts, businesses, industry, union, apprenticeship programs and the general community.
- Performs job assignments safely for the purpose of protecting people and property
- Maintains an orderly, safe, and well-disciplined learning environment as to ensure an environment conducive to learning
- Keep abreast of current practices and training methods in the area of automotive technology.
- Teach and demonstrate competency in Missouri vehicle maintenance regulations.
- Provide instruction that is relevant to current and future work specifications and job opportunities within the occupational area.
- Align instruction to facilitate articulation to post-secondary institutions
- Performs job assignment safely for the purpose of protecting people and property
- Performs other related duties as assigned
SKILLS: Skills appropriate to the automotive industry are required to perform multiple technical tasks. Specific skills necessary to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: successful instruction of students in assigned areas of CTE training and career development; effective planning, developing, and implementation of programs related to the assignment; effective communication skills including written and oral; interpret written procedures, write routine documents, speak clearly; and understand multiple-step instructions.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Include working under standardized instructions and/or routines focusing primarily on results; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and basic job- related equipment; driving a vehicle to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspection of data or product; lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; and climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Generally the job requires 30 percent sitting, 20 percent walking, and 50 percent standing. The job is performed under a range of temperature variations including outdoor work, a generally hazard-free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.
