Position Title:            Parents-As-Teacher Educator

Purpose Statement:

Through partnering, facilitating, and reflection, the Parent Educator works with parents of children from prenatal to kindergarten entry. Parent Educators provide parent education and family support to enhance the quality of parenting, increase a parent’s understanding of child development, and work together to make it possible for children to realize their full potential. The Parents-As-Teachers (PAT) Educator is responsible for implementation of the Missouri Parent Education program within the Jefferson City School District. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct family personal visits using the Parents as Teachers foundational curriculum to include discussion on parent-child interaction, child development, developmental-centered parenting, and family well-being.  
  • Plan the visit, gather materials, travel, conduct the visit in a variety of private residences around the district, and clearly document the visit using required forms. Visits may also be conducted virtually through telecommunications and videoconferencing as directed by the school district or in alternate locations at the request of the parent.
  • Plan and provide group connections for parents and families in collaboration with other parent educators and community partners.  
  • Complete child developmental, health, hearing, and vision screenings.
  • Develop and maintain a community resource network in order to be able to link families with support as needed.
  • Maintain and submit in a timely manner all required family and program documentation.
  • Organize and inventory supplies and materials.
  • Participate in regular individual reflective supervision sessions.
  • Attend staff meetings. 
  • Complete annual required competency-based professional development hours in order to remain a certified Parents as Teachers parent educator.
  • Be available to communicate with parents between scheduled personal visits when appropriate.
  • Keep current on literature and research in the field of child development and parenting issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:

Full-time, flexible position (40 hours per week) during the school year, including up to 3-4 evenings per week and occasional Saturdays. Summers and school holidays off following the Jefferson City School District’s Teacher calendar. Salary: Dependent upon education and experience. See PAT Salary schedule at Benefits: Eligible. Qualifications:

  • Education: Certification and/or a four (4)-year bachelor’s degree in either early childhood, social work, health, psychology, or a related field preferred. Will consider a two-year associate degree or two-year certificate program in early childhood education, child development or nursing. Upon occasion, fewer hours of credit from a degree granting institution which is contained within the United States Department of Education’s Directory of Post-Secondary Institutions may be considered, based upon applicant’s experience and dependent upon approval from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Experience: Demonstrated ability in working with young children and their families is required for this position. Length of successful experience varies based upon the degree held/education completed by the applicant.
  • Certification:  No prior certification is required. However, certification as a Parent Educator from the National Office for Parents as Teachers will be obtained during employment. 
  • Other: This position requires a thorough understanding of child development birth through five years of age. Parent educators must be highly organized, accountable and independent, self-motivated workers. They must be able to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.  Applicants must be competent with computer skills; including e-mail, internet, word-processing and videoconferencing. Successful completion of the Parents as Teachers Foundational and Foundational 2 training is required prior to beginning service delivery. Personal, reliable transportation is necessary for the selected applicant to conduct home visits.  

 

Physical Demands: Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, and lift 25 pounds.
